We can’t ignore the biggest news of the week which was the launch of DeepSeek. Here is our take on it and some advice that should be taken seriously as we really do care about our members.
The Launch of DeepSeek – I haven’t tried it because I wouldn’t dare download it on my phone. I will share the reason why next. However, I have heard it is powerful, more accurate, and more helpful than OpenAI’s ChatGPT. If it is true they built it for a few million dollars compared to the billions spent by other Large Language Models (LLMs), then that’s a game changer. Most experts in the west think they are not sharing the real truth.
DeepSeek - A Trojan Horse? – Bill Ackman described DeepSeek as a Trojan Horse and said TikTok, which was temporarily banned in the US over national security concerns, "is just a toy by comparison." DeepSeeks own privacy policy clearly states that it collects large amounts of personal information from users, which is then stored "in secure servers" in China.
The Data Conundrum – I think there's a vast difference between giving your data to a company bound by rules in a democratic country and a tightly controlled communist country. Nefarious players in those countries could use our data to hack us and compromise us in various ways.
That being said, I'm not thrilled that we allow companies like Meta to have access to our data. However, I'd rather choose a devil in a region where there are rules, and I could sue them than the devil in a region I have zero opportunity to take any action against.
